The main currency in a pair with which the majority of transactions - is USD. The U.S. dollar, paired with the currencies of developed countries is 7 instruments, which are commonly referred to as currency pairs "majors". Pairs, in which the USD does not participate, are called cross rates. Pairs, in which currencies of developing countries participate (Russian ruble, South African rand), are called "exotics".
- USD accounts for 72.87% of the total trading turnover. Over the past three years, this figure has decreased slightly. In the previous year, the figure was about 88%. The U.S. dollar is gradually losing its share in the total trading volume, but still confidently occupies the leading position. The order of other currencies is unchanged, only their shares have changed. As compared with the previous year, investors showed less interest in euros, as they switched to the Japanese yen. Compared to the previous year, the share of EUR has decreased by 7.3%, and the share of JPY has increased by 8.9%.
- Currencies of emerging economies account for about 24.5% of all forex transactions. This figure is growing slowly but surely. This suggests that investors are gradually moving away from the usual deals with USD and EUR because currencies of developing countries with higher volatility can bring more income.
- 4.3% is the share of the Chinese Yuan in the total number of transactions. Despite the closed nature of the Chinese economy, some traders see the Yuan as an alternative to the U.S. dollar. However, it was the offshore Yuan that got into the statistics.
- 3.5% is the share of the Hong Kong dollar. For the last year, the growth was about 1.7%, which indicates the growth of investors' interest in the Asian markets.
- The most popular currency pair is EUR/USD. It accounts for about 28% of all deals performed on the Forex market. There are also cross rates in TOP-10, but they are used mostly by professional traders.
- The average daily volatility of the EUR/USD currency pair is 80-90 points. According to this indicator, the most popular pair is in the middle. However, the relatively high volatility does not scare beginner traders, who still choose EUR/USD instead of the more predictable, due to the less volatile AUD/USD or USD/CHF.
- The most volatile pairs among the crosses are GBP/NZD, EUR/CAD, EUR/NZD, and GBP/AUD. The average daily volatility of these pairs is in the range of 170-230 pips. The cross-rates CAD/CHF and NZD/JPY have relatively low volatility (below 80 points). The higher the volatility of the asset, the more it is possible to earn from trades in both directions, but the more difficult is to forecast the rate. Such pairs are more suitable for scalping, whereas pairs with moderate volatility are for trend strategies.
- From 0 pips - the narrowest spread possible in Forex. Spread is the difference between the buying and selling of a currency pair and it cannot be completely absent. But it is so small on the ECN accounts of some brokers that it can be neglected. The smallest spread has the "major" pairs with high liquidity and the largest - with "exotics". At moments of news release spreads may increase due to a sharp imbalance between supply and demand.
- Up to 1:3000 is the size of the brokers' leverage. Leverage - the borrowed funds, which allow for increasing the volume of opened deals many times. Leverage depends on the conditions of a broker, chosen asset, and regulator. For brokers with the license of reliable regulators, leverage for beginners can be limited up to 1:20-1:50.
